About the Authors

Larry K. Pickering, M.D.

Larry K. Pickering, M.D. is professor and vice chairman for research in the department of pediatrics, and the director of the Center for Pediatric Research at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters and Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. He is the former president of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society of North America and the author of over 300 publications relating to pediatric infectious diseases. He is the editor of the 2000 Red Book: Report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Pickering is currently taking a one-year sabbatical at the National Immunization Program of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
William J. Martone, M.D.

William J. Martone, M.D. is currently the Senior Executive Director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Maryland and clinical associate professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Martone served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer at the CDC and was formerly the director of the Hospital Infections Program at the CDC. Dr. Martone is a specialist in infectious diseases.
